Poems From The Portuguese

keeper

keeper

he had been the keeper of two cats
an orchid turned to ash
the keeper of an arch set northwards
by sentries and walls
clothes lines and some flowerpots
open to the sun exposed
to april showers to the drumming
of everyday annoying music

he had been the keeper of that space
open over the arches the lines
advancing out of the blue hitting you
the angel appears through vivid thinning mist
rushing over the morning

coming between us his frazzled wings
suit and tie trumpet over one
shoulder he might get ahead of
himself which would be another way
of self-betraying saying i fallinlove too
easily i fallinlove too fast but
he couldn’t leap out of the music
or be that angle of the body
bent over the trumpet
the harmony that serves invention

another way of bursting the bars
this terribly clumsy feeling
he couldn’t completely express without cutting
that knot without getting to the beginning

guardião

tinha sido o guardião de dois gatos
de uma orquídea mudada em cinza
o guardião de uma arcada posta
a norte por sentinelas e muralhas
cordas de roupa e alguns vasos
abertos sobre o sol expostos
à chuva de abril ao tamborilar
da música quotidiana e incómoda

tinha sido o guardião desse espaço
aberto sobre as arcadas as linhas
avançando fora do hábito atinge-te
mostra-se na névoa vista e dissipada
o anjo que se precipita sobre a manhã

entre nós as suas asas esfarrapadas
fato e gravata o trompete apoiado
num dos ombros podia antecipar-se
a si próprio que seria outro modo
de trair-se dizer i fallinlove too
easily i fallinlove too fast mas
