Poems From The Portuguese

you, who saw …

you, who saw ...

you, who saw fjords and corals,
who arrived from subterranean
words and from what is left

to be said, who learned silence
in many languages and one day
flipped a coin to cheat

death, how many more verbs
do you need to go through
this pointless narrative?

© Translated by Ana Hudson, 2011

tu que viste…

tu que viste fiordes e corais,
que chegaste das palavras
subterrâneas e do que fica

por dizer, que aprendeste o silêncio
em várias línguas e atiraste um dia
a moeda ao ar para enganar

a morte, quantos verbos
queres mais para percorrer
esta narrativa inútil?
